What is Telogen Effluvium:

Telogen Effluvium is a reversible hair loss condition which is characterized by sudden and excessive generalized hair loss after a period of significant stress. It can affect men and women of any age but is more common as we get older.

What Causes Telogen Effluvium:

 Telogen effluvium occurs weeks after a significantly stressful event. The stressful event induces 10 %-20% of scalp hairs into telogen phase or resting phase. Within a matter of weeks, these hairs fall out. Most common types of stress leading to telogen effluvium include major surgery, childbirth, and serious medical illness. Excessive and prolonged emotional stress can trigger telogen effluvium. Other causes of telogen effluvium excessive hair loss are poor diet, low iron, use of recreational drugs and certain prescription medications, such as starting and stopping birth control pills, certain antidepressants etc can lead to telogen effluvium.

Telogen Effluvium vs Androgenic Hair loss or Pattern Hair Loss:

Telogen Effluvium is not the same as androgenic hair loss, although it is quite common to have both telogen effluvium and androgenic hair loss at the same time.The key differences between telogen effluvium and androgenic hair loss are:

  • Telogen effluvium is not genetically mediated, androgenic hair loss is genetic
  • Telogen effluvium is reversible, androgenic hair loss progressively worsens with age
  • Telogen effluvium may correct itself on its own, androgenic hair loss keeps getting worse
  • In telogen effluvium, there is a temporary dysfunction of hair follicles which pushes them in the resting (telogen) phase, whereas in androgenic hair loss hair loss there is a permanent weakening of the hair follicles.
  • The individual hair shaft size and thickness in telogen effluvium is not affected whereas, in androgenic alopecia, the hair shaft gets thinner and thinner over time.
    In telogen effluvium hair shedding occurs all over, in androgenic hair loss more is lost in the frontal and middle scalp than the back but it can be all over in some people

How is Telogen Effluvium Treated?

To reverse TE, FIRST, the triggers for hair loss MUST be treated, such as recovery from the surgery, physical illness and emotional stress, treatment of low iron, identifying any medication that might be causing hair shedding. After resolving the initial trigger and with the absence of any androgenic alopecia, most cases of telogen effluvium resolve spontaneously with normal hair growth within months after the stress is resolved, and no treatment is needed. 

The regrowth of hair to normal density is quicker and more efficient in younger individuals and those without any androgenic hair loss.

PRP Hair Loss Treatments For Telogen Effluvium:

We consider  PRP Hair Loss Treatments for telogen effluvium if recovery from initial hair loss is slow and less than optimum in spite of correcting the underlying cause of telogen effluvium. PRP hair loss treatments help push the resting hair follicles (telogen phase) back into the active growth phase (the anagen phase), AFTER appropriately addressing any and all triggers. PRP Hair Loss Treatments will not prevent recurrence of telogen effluvium without correcting the triggers.

For telogen effluvium treatment with PRP, we recommend between two to three PRP injection treatments, six to eight week apart.
