6 Tips for Sun Burn Treatment
1. Prevention is the best option
Prevent sunburn by wearing sunscreen minimum spf 15 every day even on cloudy days and in winter!
Avoid direct and prolonged sun exposure between 10 am and 4 pm Wear protective clothing.
Obviously the best approach to sunburns is preventive but if you do get sunburn, here are a few tips to help reduce the discomfort.
2. Cool the Sunburn
Cold compresses help reduce heat induced damage. Use soft washcloth soaked in cool water or rinse the affected area with cold water to cool sun burnt skin.
3. Calm the Sunburn
Aloe and other topical anti-ainflammatory skincare products like vitamin E oil may help reduce skin inflammation which leads to dark pigmentation and scarring.
Gentle calming skin cleanser is the best way to clean the sunburn
4. Moisturize the Sunburn
Moisturizers and skin emollients provide barrier for the skin for speedy healing.
Use a calming, gentle moisturizer free of potentially irritating additives like Calm Biopeptide creme.
Avoid products containing alcohol, which can be drying for skin. Also avoid topical anesthetic creams such as benzocaine, which may lead to excessive skin irritation. Rarely, benzocaine can cause a serious, even deadly, condition that decreases the blood oxygen levels and should not be used in children under 2 without Physician supervision
5. Leave the Blisters Intact:
Do not puncture blisters if you get blisters from sunburn. Blisters provide a ” natural wound dressing” for the sunburn and keep the area sterile while it heals. Popping blisters will increase risk of infection and delay healing
6. Pain Medication:
Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen may help reduce discomfort. Anti-inflammatory medications like Naproxen (Aleve) aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) may reduce pain, swelling and redness and can be taken according to the label instruction
Aspirin should not be given to children or teenagers due to serious possible side effects
When the sunburn starts to peel in a few days, continue gentle anti-inflammatory moisturizer and a non-irritating sunscreen. Prevent sun burns and sun induced skin damage with daily use of sunscreen minimum 15 to all exposed body parts.
