How to Best Reduce Dark Under-eye Circles and Under-Eye Hollows?

Dark under-eye circles or periorbital hyperpigmentation, is a skin condition that involves dark pigmentation of upper and lower eyelids. Aesthetically, dark circles around the eyes can make a person look tired and older than actual age. Dark eye circles tend to be more common in individuals with darker skin and we have many patients who seek treatment for under-eye dark circles in our Dallas and Southlake offices. Dark under-eye circles affects men and women equally, it gets worse with aging due to loss of skin thickness and elasticity and loss of volume below the skin.

In addition to extra pigmentation, dark under-eye circles and under-eye hollows are frequently associated with other issues such as thinning skin, loss of elasticity and loss of volume below the skin. The extent of each of these problems determines the presentation of dark under-eye circles and hollows in each individual and the best outcome is achieved with treatments aimed at correcting each of the additional issues.

One of the questions I get asked a lot by many of my patients is :”Have you treated dark pigmented scars in black American individuals and other individuals with very dark skin”?

I can confidently say that YES we have several Black American patients, African patients and several South Indian patients with very dark skin (Fitzpatrick V and VI) who have shown significant improvement in hyperpigmented scars with different types of treatment protocols.

Treatment Of Melasma and Hyperpigmentation with PRP Dermal Injections And Microneedling:

Melasma and hyper-pigmentation are common skin conditions in all skin types. The incidence and severity of melasma and deep skin pigmentation is higher in people with darker skin. Mild hyper-pigmentation and melasma can frequently be successfully treated with prescription skin lightening agents alone or in combination with medical microdermabrasion and or chemical peels. Care needs to be exercised with microdermabrasion and chemical peels because darker skin can respond to aggressive skin abrasion and chemical peeling with “post-inflammatory pigmentation” or PIP; which is what makes treating hyper-pigmentation and melasma a challenge and I do like a challenge once in a while!.

The unfortunate reality is that melasma and hyper-pigmentation tends to recur upon sun exposure and repeated application of skin lightening agents with very diligent sun protection is needed for effective reversal of pigmentation with any method. In the years of my practice I have come across quite a few patients who respond minimally to traditional prescription skin lightening cremes with or without in office microdermabrion and chemical peels. Until recently, there was no option for these individuals.

Why You should Consider Getting A Series of  Microdermabrasion Treatments?

Completed under physician supervision, our microdermabrasion treatments aim to gently resurface superficial layers of the skin while improving skin tone, warding off acne, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and pores. We use the diamond tip microdermabrasion method and have two different microdermabrasion systems, The Viora Pristine microdermabrasion system in Southlake and the Diamondtome microdermabrasion system in Dallas for a variety of individual needs, and both systems deliver medical grade microdermabrasion with no downtime following treatments. Prior to the first session, patients meet with a certified clinical assistant/ medical aesthetician for an initial evaluation which includes a review of medical history and prior experience with skin treatments; Dr. Malik reviews every evaluation with her team to determine the optimum skincare treatment plan. Each treatment lasts approximately 15-20 minutes.

Microdermabrasion treatment by itself gradually improves skin surface texture, fine lines and appearance of pores but it makes a GREAT complimentary treatment to almost any other skin program for aging, acne, pigmentation correction, scar reduction and so on.

Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT with Harvest Micropen is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for the treatment of fine lines, acne scars and improvement of the skin’s overall appearance. During this cosmetic skin treatment, micro needles are used to induce controlled micro-wounds to the surface layer of your skin which stimulates collagen and elastin for wound healing. The skin’s repair process results in a thicker dermis with softer appearance of wrinkles and scars. Harvest Micropen™ also creates superficial micro-channels which allow topical skin treatment gels, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory creams and serums to be absorbed more effectively into the skin.

Skin Treatments with the Harvest Micropen can lead to an improvement in the following skin conditions: Fine lines and wrinkles, photo-aging, rough, leathery skin texture, hyper-pigmentation (surface brown spots), hypo-pigmentation, acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks.
