What is KYBELLA® injection ?
KYBELLA® is the brand name of a medication called deoxycholic acid. KYBELLA® injection is the first and only FDA-approved non-surgical treatment to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe “double chin” due to moderate to severe fat in this area. KYBELLA® injection is indicated for use in adults over the age of 18 years only. It is not known if KYBELLA® is safe and effective in children less than 18 years of age. KYBELLA® is not FDA approved for use outside of the sub-mental or “under the chin area” however like any medication off label use by an experienced, board certified physician with a license to practice medicine can use her discretion to use KYBELLA® injection for fat redcution in areas other than submental fat.
How does KYBELLA® get rid of double chin?
The medication in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring substance in our body that is produced by our gall bladder as a bile acid. The function of deoxycholic acid is to emulsify dietary fat or breakdown dietary fat for fat metabolism and excretion of excess fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, your fat that is released from the destroyed fat cells, gets removed by your body’s normal fat mobilization process and the fat cells that have been destroyed cannot store any more fat.
How will I know that KYBELLA® is right for me?
At our Dallas and Southlake office you will always be evaluated by the physician, i.e me before your KYBELLA® treatment. I will review your medical and surgical history, your medications and supplements before your examination. I will assess the presence of fat and the location of fat in the under chin area; KYBELLA® is only indicated if your double chin is due to excess fat below the skin as opposed to below the muscle. If you’re bothered by submental fullness, or double chin, call our offices at 888-210-9693 for a consultation to discuss KYBELLA® as an option for your double chin reduction.
How many people have been treated with KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA® has been the focus of a global clinical development program involving over 20 clinical studies with more than 2,600 patients worldwide, of which over 1,600 have been treated with KYBELLA®.
What side effects are possible with KYBELLA® treatments?
The safety profile of KYBELLA® is well characterized after the clinical study which included a decent size study group. The most common side effects from KYBELLA® are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. KYBELLA® can cause serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. These are not all of the possible side effects of KYBELLA®. We will discuss all possible side effects with you at the time of your consultation.
How many treatments will I need?
Your KYBELLA® treatment regimen will be customized to your unique needs. We will be able to determine the amount of KYBELLA® to use for your treatment and we will be able to give you an idea of how many treatment you might need based on the extent of fat deposits and your desired chin profile. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. During these sessions, I will administer KYBELLA® into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced no less than one month apart.
In clinical studies, results for KYBELLA®-treated patients who had a ≥1-grade composite improvement were 8% (1 treatment), 28% (2 treatments), 43% (3 treatments), 55% (4 treatments), 66% (5 treatments) and 72% (6 treatments)
In clinical studies, results for KYBELLA®-treated patients who had a ≥2-grade composite improvement were 0% (1 treatment), .2% (2 treatments), .8% (3 treatments), 3.5% (4 treatments), 3.9% (5 treatments) and 15% (6 treatments)
59% of subjects in the clinical trials received all 6 treatments
In reality, most of our patients have been happy with 1-3 treatments and we space them 6 weeks apart because in my clinical judgement it takes that long to get rid of all swelling and inflammation after each treatment.
How long will the results last?
When injected into the fat under your chin, KYBELLA® causes destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, retreatment with KYBELLA® is not expected. In other words, if you dont gain a large amount of weight (which will lead to filling up the surrounding fat cell) you will not get your double chin back after your KYBELLA® treatments.
