Southlake Low Level Laser Therapy- LLLT For Hair Regeneration
Low Level Laser Hair Therapy is a non-invasive laser treatment currently available at major medical hair loss treatment centers in the U.S. for hair regeneration in individuals with androgenic alopecia as a stand alone treatment option or more commonly as part of a comprehensive hair regeneration treatment program. In our Dallas/Southlake based non-surgical hair regeneration treatment program we use the LLLT along with medical treatments and PRP + ACell hair regeneration scalp injection treatment as clinically indicated in each patient. The hair regeneration response to LLLT varies from person to person as with any regenerative treatment such as PRP + ACell injection, oral medications and topical minoxidil due to various individual factors such as genetics, lifestyle, nutrition, stress etc. Overall, most regenerative treatments tend to work better when administered to individuals who are in early stages of hair loss and have viable hair follicles in the scalp to regenerate new hairs. Also, we have found that a comprehensive approach with improvements in lifestyle, nutrition, medications (as clinically indicated) and addition of other treatments such as PRP + ACell (if no contraindications) tend to yield the best overall results in individuals with early hair loss.
What Is Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) ?
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) or cool laser for hair regrowth is an exciting new option for people with androgenic alopecia which is non-invasive and painless . LLLT received FDA-clearance in January of 2007 for treatment of “androgenic alopecia” in men or “male pattern hair loss” and in 2009 it got FDA clearance for treatment of “female pattern hair loss”.LLLT is also known as; red light therapy, cold laser, soft laser, biostimulation and photobiomodulation.
There are several types of lasers that are used in medicine, surgery and in cosmetic dermatology treatments including resurfacing lasers that work via controlled burn of skin surface to induce collagen synthesis and lasers that heat up and destroy hair follicles for laser hair reduction. LLLT is VERY different from other cosmetic lasers and lasers used for hair removal in that LLLT produces no heat; LLLT is in fact a “cold” laser which uses diodes that emit red light (wavelength 630-670 nanometers), which effectively penetrates the scalp to increase circulation to the hair follicles, and induce activation of dormant hairs.
What Causes Hair Loss In Androgenic Alopecia?
To understand how LLLT works for hair regrowth you need to be familiar with the growth cycle of your hair follicles and how hair loss occurs in androgenic alopecia or “pattern baldness”. Your hair growth cycle has three phases:
- Anagen (growth) phase
- Telogen (resting) phase
- Catagen (shedding) phase
In androgenetic alopecia, under the effect of testosterone, there is excessive build up of dihydrotestosterone DHT in hair follicles, a derivative of testosterone in skin and scalp. The higher levels of DHT in the hair follicles lead to inflammation of hair follicles and excessive hair shedding. This results in disruption of the hair growth cycle with a higher number of hair follicles turning to catagenic(shedding) phase and telogenic(resting) phase AND a smaller number of hair follicles in anagenic (growth) phase. The outcome is progressively thinning hair, with excessive hair loss and ultimately baldness.
How Does the LLLT Work For Hair Regeneration?
Low level laser therapy is believed to increase blood flow in the scalp and reduce the levels of DHT in the hair follicles. This reduces inflammation of the hair follicles, stimulates the circulation to the hair follicles and reverses the hair phases from catagen(shedding) or telogen(resting) follicles to anagen(growth) follicles; the result is less hair shedding and increase in hair growth and density.
What Is The Difference Between “Spa Lasers” And “Medical Lasers” For Hair Regrowth?
There are many “cool” lasers advertised for thinning hair for home use and for spa treatments. Most of these lasers are not FDA approved for hair regrowth and do not have clinical studies to back the claims. These devices do not require any medical supervision and no special training to operate the equipment. Medical lasers for hair regeneration are FDA cleared, have clinically proven results and they require to be used under physician supervision by properly trained medical staff.
Who Is A Good Candidate For LLLT For Hair Regeneration?
Low level laser therapy has been approved for hair regrowth for men and women suffering from androgenic alopecia or hereditary baldness or hereditary thinning hair which manifests as male pattern baldness an female pattern baldness. The extent of baldness determines the results from your treatment.

- Women with Ludwig-Savin I-4, II-1, II-2

How Soon Can I Expect To See The Results From LLLT For Hair Regrowth?
Results vary depending on many factors, including the degree of hair loss and individual response. As a stand alone treatment, LLLT has been shown to reduce hair loss within the first four to six weeks of starting the treatment. We use Micropen with topical minoxidil before each LLLT in our Southlake hair regeneration treatment center to maximize the hair regeneration response from your LLLT. Some individuals may notice a delayed response, hair growth three to four months after starting the LLLT. Most men and women notice a reduction in hair loss, increase in hair density over the months of their LLLT treatments. Most of our patients have a single PRP + ACell injection treatment before starting their LLLT, however some people are not good candidates for PRP + ACell hair regeneration treatment for medical reasons, for these individuals, LLLT combined with topical Micropen + minoxidil and at home minoxidil with or without oral medications is a great option to reduce hair loss and regenerate new hairs.
Could the LLLT stop my hair from falling out?
Physicians who have used LLLT in their practice, have reported that over 90% of their patients notice that their excessive hair loss is reduced between 4-6 weeks of LLLT. This may vary in each individual depending on other factors that lead to excess hair loss. On average, about 100 hairs a day is considered normal. Excessive hair loss is more than 100 hairs/day.
How Long Does The Low Level Laser Therapy Take?
Our protocol for hair regeneration with LLLT is as follows :
- 60 minutes of LLLT
- We recommend Micropen + minoxidil scalp treatment before your LLLT which takes an additional 15-20 minutes.
- You total treatment time for LLLT hair regrowth treatment is a little under 2 hours including 15-20 minutes of numbing.
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
- We recommend 2 treatments/month
- We administer the LLLT as one to two treatment sessions.
- Each session is six months long.
- We evaluate your hair regrowth after finishing the first session.
- Adequate hair growth. You continue recommended topical, medical care and follow up in one year
- Less than adequate hair growth, we recommend another 6 months of LLLT twice a month
- Re-evaluate after you complete your second session.

Is the Low Level Laser Treatment For Hair Regeneration Painful?
There is virtually little to no sensation felt during the Low Level Laser Therapy for Hair Regrowth. There is mild discomfort from the Micropen + Minoxidil scalp treatment which is performed before you start your LLLT. We use a topical numbing crème before the Mmicropen treatment to reduce your discomfort from the treatment. After your Micropen treatment, you are comfortably seated under the LLLT cap and can read a magazine or take a nap. There is no heat, no burning or stinging during your LLLT for hair regeneration.
Are There Any Risks Associated With the Hair Regrowth Laser?
