Plasma For Melasma- Is PRP An Effective Treatment For Melasma?

NailaMalikMD_Dallas-Melasma-TreatmentI have been treating melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIP) in darker skin types for many years and I know first hand how frustrating treating these conditions can be!

First of all there is not a single treatment that completely “gets rid” of hyperpigmentation of melasma and PIP, I tell my patients to expect 60-70% improvement in pigmentation over months of in office treatments, at home prescription creme and diligent sun protection. Any aggressive treatment is likely to make the pigmentation worse than baseline which is not an acceptable outcome.

Secondly, even after successful treatment the pigmentation is likely to return upon exposure to sun, changes in hormones and recurrence of the inflammatory condition that led to PIP in the first place; such as eczema, acne, folliculitis  or other inflammatory skin conditions.

I  came across an article published in Annals of Dermatology June2014 which described the results of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments on a melasma patient and it seemed promising.

Read the article here:

We started Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments for cosmetic skin treatments in Dallas and Southlake in January of 2015 and have had magnificent results for skin tightening (PRP and  injectable radiofrequency), non-surgical facelilft(PRP and HA dermal filler) and PRP facial for skin surface aging (PRP and Micropen).

We decided to give the PRP “plasma for melasma” treatment a trial for two of our melasma patients who had shown resistance to other treatments and so far they have shown remarkable improvement in their pigmentation; about 70-80% reduction following a series of 4-5 treatments with little downtime. The PRP for melasma treatments have also had the added benefit of improvement in texture, fine lines, appearance of pores. Our patients were particularly resistant to conventional treatments with topical skin lightening agents and chemical peels.

I think PRP for melasma or Plasma for melasma is a promising treatment option for those with melasma resistant to treatment with topical prescription skin lightening products and chemical peels.
