LED Treatments For Moderate to Severe Acne
Red and blue light LED treatments better than blue light alone for management of moderate to severe acne
Acne is the most common skin condition in America. Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder associated with blockage of hair follicles and overgrowth of skin bacteria, P acnes. Acne management can be frustrating and usually requires a combination approach including lifestyle, gentle medicated skin care, oral medications (when necessary and for shortest duration when possible) and in office medical acne treatments to reduce pore blockage, inflammation and scarring.
For our Dallas and Southlake acne treatments we combine lifestyle counseling with medicated skincare and in office medical microdermabrasion, topical retinoid application with the medical microdermabrasion, medicated acne peels and prescription medications for best treatment results. We are excited to now offer the LED blue and red light therapy for moderate to severe acne in combination with other appropriate acne treatments.
Blue light from light emitting diode or LED has been used for many years to manage acne alongside other treatment modalities. The blue light peak wavelength 409-419 nm is known to reduce the P.acnes in the skin leading to fewer active acne lesions in as little as one treatment. In a study published in 2007, red and blue light combination therapy was shown to be more effective in management of moderate to severe acne in most skin types even as dark as Fitzpatrick phototype V.
“In the first study, researchers from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, treated 24 subjects with mild-to-severe symmetric facial acne vulgaris with eight sessions of treatments. The treatments, conducted twice per week, three days apart, alternated between 415 nm blue light (20 minutes/session, 48 J/cm2) and 633 nm red light (20 minutes/session, 96 J/cm2) from a light-emitting diode (LED)-based therapy system. (J Cosm Laser Ther. 2006; 8:71–75).
Patients included those with Fitzpatrick skin types II through V, and they received a mild microdermabrasion before each session. In assessments of acne at the four-week follow-up, the mean lesion count reduction was significant at 46 percent (p=0.001). At the 12-week follow-up, the mean lesion count reduction was also significant at 81 percent (p=0.001).”
The addition of LED red and blue light for acne management in Dallas and Southlake has helped our patients get even better control of their inflammatory acne and we are hoping to reduce the use of oral antibiotics with the addition of red and blue acne therapy. The LED red and blue light treatments are done twice a week, alternatively for the first 4-6 weeks followed by maintenance schedule which is determined by severity of your acne and your response to the treatment.
The treatments are sold as 8-treatment package for $175 or $25/single treatment
We combine your LED red and blue light acne therapy with microdermabrasion, retin A spot treatments, medicated chemical peel and medicated skincare for best results of your acne treatments in Dallas and Southlake.
