Treat Scars with PRP: Scar Reduction FAQ Answered

Scars and marks tell a story about what we have lived through and the changes our body has seen. While telling, they are not always what we wish to have on our skin aesthetically speaking. Cosmetic regenerative PRP therapy could be the answer to minimizing the appearance of scars from your skin. Please remember, individual results will vary. It is always best to consult a physician directly to discuss your goals and wishes for the outcome of your treatments. Click Here to view actual results from patients who received PRP Scar Reduction treatments with Dr. Naila Malik.

What is Cosmetic Regenerative PRP Therapy?

PRP treatment involves harvesting Platelet Rich Plasma from your blood and injecting it into tissue where regeneration is needed. This treatment is used on many things including scaring, muscle injury, and even for hair loss.

What Types of Scars Can Be Treated with PRP?

There are several different types of scars that may be treated with PRP. They include:

  • Acne Scars

  • Deep Scaring

  • Scars that have resisted prior treatment

  • Scars that are hyper pigmented

  • Surgical Scars

Unfortunately, Dr. Malik does not treat keloid scars.

What Types of Treatments are Needed in Addition to PRP?

The types of treatments needed really depend on the type of scaring you have. Southlake and Dallas provide a wide variety of treatments and procedures that complement the PRP treatments. Some of these treatments include:

  • Resurfacing treatments such as microneedling or fractional CO2 laser

  • Collagen Induction Treatments, deep scars can be managed with collagen induction from inside out with a series of  Microneedle Fractional Radiofrequency

  • Volume Replenishment with Dermal Fillers. Ice pick scars with residual scar depth after resurfacing and collagen induction treatments can be subtly “filled” with adequate dermal fillers. Dr. Malik frequently dilutes the dermal filler with YOUR PRP for natural collagen induction and to reduce the amount of dermal filler needed for several large scars.

PRP treatment is accompanied differently depending on the depth of your scarring. Dr. Malik will determine the best course of action for your specific scaring during a consultation in office. Most people have a combination of superficial, deep, red and pigmented scars and frequently a combination type approach is recommended for the desired results.

Am I a Candidate?

Because of the medical nature of PRP, some people are not candidates because of medical or medicinal contradictions. Some of the things that may prevent you from being able to receive PRP are:

  • Platelet Dysfunction

  • Septicemia or local injection site infection

  • Hematopoietic Cancers or Bone Cancers

  • Aspirin and other NSAIDs use within one week of PRP therapy
